We often hear the
term “swing weight” in the golfing industry. Just exactly what
does that term mean? According to Ralph Maltby of “The GolfWorks”
it is… “The measurement of a golf clubs weight distribution; grip, shaft
& head, about a fulcrum point which is established at a specified
distance from the grip end of the club.”
In other words, the heavier the club head is in relation
to the weight of the shaft and grip, the higher the swing weight rating
(or the heavier it feels to swing). If you have two putter heads
that are identical in every way, right down to the gram, and you install
different length shafts into them (keep in mind you’re using the same
grips on both putters), the putter with the longest shaft will have the
higher rated swing weight thus creating the illusion of being a heavier
putter.
There are ways for compensating these factors. If
you want to make the shorter putter have the same swing weight as the
longer putter, you’d have to add weight to the head of the shorter
putter. And to make the taller putter feel the same as the shorter
putter, you’d need to add weight to the top end of the shaft beneath the
butt end of the grip, thus making it feel lighter.
But what would happen if we were to nearly erase the
swing weight of a putter? If the putter weighed close to the
industry average weight, then the putter would be too light to
produce a smooth swing. So now we have to make the putter
extremely heavy.
TreeLine's "No Swing Weight" putter is a very heavy
putter. Not as heavy as other brands in its class on the market,
but none the less heavy. We believe that our competitors have made
their putters too heavy, which makes you tire too easily and too quickly
while practicing. TreeLine's “No Swing Weight Putter” heads weigh
approximately 400 grams, which is 50-75 grams heavier than an average,
high quality, standard putter head. We add 220 grams of weight to
the butt end of the shaft, to help center balance the putter. This
process virtually diminishes any measurable swing weight, but because of
the mass of the putter, it works entirely different than a conventional
putter of today.
There have been many articles in the golfing industry
supporting the fact that a heavier putter promotes a smoother swing
(you’re welcome to do your own research study on this topic). The
way it works is this, the heavier the putter, the more muscles it takes
to swing the putter, so the smaller muscles remain more dormant, and the
larger muscles engage, creating more of a pendulum style of a stroke.
Rather than just using your arms and wrists (which many high
handicappers do), your shoulders will engage during the swing to create
a smoother stroke. On a larger scale, an average person couldn’t
lift an average-sized bag of sand with only their arms, they need to use
their larger muscles like their legs, shoulders and back. Of
course, our “No Swing Weight Putter” isn’t anything like a bag of sand,
but it is heavy enough to engage more of your larger muscles to smooth
out your putting stroke.
Another key factor that our "No Swing Weight" putter
promotes is a more relaxed grip. In Tiger Woods’ book “How I Play
Golf”, Tiger mentions a conversation he once had with Ben Crenshaw, whom
at the time, Tiger considered the greatest putter the game had ever
seen. He asked Ben how tight he gripped his putter? Ben
answered “If I gripped it any looser, it would fall out of my hands.”
It is a known fact among low handicappers that the more relaxed your
putting grip, the easier it is to feel the club head weight of the
putter, therefore promoting a more accurate ball strike for distance.
Most low handicappers also like a standard-sized putter grip because a
smaller grip also promotes more accurate distances in ball travel,
because again it aids in your muscles feeling the weight of the putter.
The feel of our "No Swing Weight" putter when it strikes the ball, is
very unique, and promotes a very distinctive sound.
Also, you might take note that if you walk and carry your
bag, the “No Swing Weight Putter” may not be a good choice for you
because of the added weight. However, if you use a pull cart, or a
riding cart, there’s really no problem. In fact, I (Bart
Nordstrom, TreeLine Putters owner), use a pull cart, and so I have a “No
Swing Weight” putter in my bag. I also have several customers that
carry their bag with a "No Swing Weight" putter, and they haven't once
complained to me about the weight, and several of them are my regular
golf partners, their silence speaks volumes. I highly recommend
this putter. This is an extremely solid and unique putter, order
yours today!
Currently the "No
Swing Weight" putter is only available in our "TrainRail" & "DoubleDot"
models. You should also note, that just because we offer this
putter in the TrainRail & DoubleDot models, that doesn't mean all
TrainRail & DoubleDot models are in the No Swing Weight putter class.
They are available in the normal weights.
